MOP Partially Reopens Panama-Colón Highway

The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has partially reopened the section in the El Guarumalen area of the Limón district on the Panama-Colón highway. This part of the highway had been closed since August 2025 due to progressive settlement that compromised road safety. José Murgas, resident engineer of the MOP, reported that the progress achieved in the area stabilization project allows it to support light traffic, for which the passage of private vehicles and public transport is authorized. “This is a partial reopening; heavy transport must continue to use the highway, as the stabilization work remains in progress,” he indicated. He added that the project has an approximate progress of 60%, and work will continue, especially in the reinforcement of the side slopes, which are fundamental for the definitive stability of the road. For her part, Elvia Ábrego, regional director of the MOP in Colón, called on drivers to reduce their speed when passing through the area, due to the presence of technical personnel and heavy equipment in the work area. “The road has not been completed in its entirety. We ask for understanding and caution to guarantee the safety of workers and users,” she stated. The MOP apologized to the public for the inconveniences caused during the closure and thanked the support of various institutions that collaborated to achieve the reopening, including IDAAN, MiAmbiente, as well as the board of the Limón district and other entities linked to the project.
