Pension Payments Suspended Amid CSS Fraud Investigation

CSS Director Dino Mon announced the suspension of suspected fraudulent pension payments; internal audit uncovered 52 cases, with a total loss of $10 million.

The director stated that as an administrative measure, they will suspend pension payments for those whose irregular payments are certain until the Public Prosecutor's Office completes its investigations. This matter had been under investigation in previous administrations, admitted Mon, although without reaching conclusions. 'We have reinforced internal controls with the idea of actually seeking out all these patterns that will lead us to a very certain conclusion regarding pension payments,' Mon stated. Mon mentioned that quotas from deceased persons and from pensioners who continue to work were used, which altered the records of people who are still contributing. Dino Mon, the institution's general director, revealed that evidence of an irregular process with quota alterations in the pension payment system was found, and they realized it was more than just an administrative error. To date, the audit conducted internally by the CSS has detected 52 cases that are documented and were presented to the prosecutor's office yesterday. A multi-million dollar fraud was detected in the pension program of the Social Security Fund (CSS), which was referred to the Public Prosecutor's Office to initiate investigations. Mon does not rule out that more cases may emerge soon, for which they continue to try to locate them. These cases represent an expected collection of $10 million for the CSS, of which $3 to $4 million has been accrued, affecting the pension system of insured individuals. He also added that they have reviewed the cash flow and are validating that all transactions are correct, as it was through this action that they became aware of the anomaly. The irregular movements have not been uniform.
