National Water Shutdown Operation

National Water Shutdown Operation The National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (Idaan) began a national water shutdown operation on Wednesday, February 4, due to non-payment, targeting both residential and commercial customers with outstanding balances.

This measure aims to reduce the accumulated debt and strengthen the necessary revenue to sustain the water system's operation.

Debt Exceeds $96 Million Idaan's Commercial Director, Marvina Ábrego, informed Crítica that residential customers' delinquency amounts to $80.2 million, while commercial clients owe another $16 million.

She detailed that the Panama province leads the list of highest delinquency, with a debt reaching $10.2 million.

Call for Payment Arrangements Ábrego explained that delinquent users can approach collection agencies or manage payment arrangements through online banking to avoid service suspension.

She reiterated that shutdowns will apply to those with two to three months of bill arrears.

Revenue Sustains Water Treatment Plants The official emphasized that timely payment of the service is vital for the system's operation, as this revenue depends on the maintenance of 56 water treatment plants nationwide.

“We urge customers to pay their water bill because the institution depends on it,” she stated.

Operations Will Continue Year-Round Idaan confirmed that suspension operations will be permanently maintained throughout the year in different regions of the country as part of its strategy to reduce delinquency and ensure service continuity.
