Panama Invests $19 Million in School Bridge Construction

The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) presented to the Cabinet the progress of Phase 2 of the bridge construction program, aiming to guarantee safe passage for over 11,700 students in rural areas. This second phase involves the construction of suspension bridges in the Kodri, Ñokribo, and Nedrini regions, within the Ngäbe Buglé comarca, where river and stream floods have claimed lives in recent years. Each bridge will be between 45 and 160 meters long, depending on the river's course, with the passage over the Guairivira river reaching 145 meters. The project will have an investment of over 19 million balboas, a government bet to improve connectivity and security for communities in the Ngäbe Buglé comarca. The plan seeks to ensure that children and young people can get to their schools without risks. The head of the MOP, José Luis Andrade, explained that 4 bridges will be built in the Ñurum and Müna districts; 34 in Kankintú, Jirondai, and Santa Catalina; and 12 in Mironó, Besikó, and Nole Duima. This brings the total number of structures under Phase 1 and 2 of the program to 100. The project is projected to generate 500 direct jobs this year and will benefit some 45 schools located in vulnerable communities.
