Chinese Ports Test Panama's Ability to Manage Ship Registry

Escalating tensions with China are affecting Panama's merchant registry, one of the world's largest. The Panamanian maritime industry proposes to address the issue by proactively resolving any deficiencies in vessels flagged by the Central American nation.

Chinese Ports Test Panama's Ability to Manage Ship Registry

Panama is facing challenges regarding the detention of its-flagged vessels in Chinese ports. This occurs amidst years of disputes and a court ruling concerning two ports near the Panama Canal. The Panamanian government, led by Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha, stated that the detentions are a «product of the routine in the maritime industry,» but hopes China will separate the Supreme Court's decision on port operations from any other interpretations. According to the president of the Panamanian Maritime Chamber, René Gómez, the number of affected vessels has nearly doubled from the previous 40. The issue may stem from technical deficiencies on Panamanian-flagged ships, which tend to be older. The Panamanian Maritime Authority recommends proactively informing shipowners about potential deficiencies to address them before arrival. This measure, experts believe, will not only solve technical issues but also help mitigate unjustified detentions.
