The Ministry of Health (Minsa) confirmed 15 cases of pertussis in the Ngäbe-Buglé region, specifically in the areas of Soloy, Quebrada Caña, and Cerro Miel.
The entity stated that the affected individuals are under 14 years old; some of them have not received the vaccine for the disease or have an incomplete vaccination schedule.
The head of the National Department of Epidemiology of Minsa, Blas Armien, explained that there is one additional case related by epidemiological link.
Additionally, the death of a 17-year-old patient was confirmed; the case is under investigation.
The official urged parents to vaccinate children under one year of age and children from 1 to 4 years old, as well as adults.
He reiterated that the vaccine is safe and free.
Pertussis, a highly contagious respiratory disease, mainly affects children under five years of age, although it can occur in people of all ages.
