The regional office of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) in Colón, in conjunction with the Guna Yala region, has stepped up epidemiological surveillance by implementing an active monitoring system for birds and pigs, aiming to prevent any diseases affecting the community's livestock.
During this initiative, technical teams checked for high-impact diseases such as Newcastle disease, salmonellosis, Classical Swine Fever (CSF), and brucellosis, all with the goal of strengthening prevention and control measures within the Guna Yala comarca.
The communities visited in Corregimiento N.° 1 were: Tikantiki, Río Tigre, Río Sidra, Soledad Miria, Naranjo Chico, Cartí Sugdup, and Isla Nurdup.
Furthermore, samples were collected for analysis in official animal health laboratories, a crucial step to maintain the health of the poultry and swine sectors both in the comarca and nationally, thereby ensuring the food security of families.
