Dengue Fever Cases Surge in Panama

Dengue fever cases continue to rise in Panama. Across the country, 1,617 people have been hospitalized due to complications associated with the disease. Additionally, 28 deaths related to the illness have been recorded in various regions. The national incidence rate stands at 346.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Tocumen and 24 de Diciembre lead the country in dengue cases, with 1,080 and 971 confirmed cases respectively, making them the most affected districts. In epidemiological week 53, from December 28, 2025, to January 3, 2026, a cumulative total of 16,262 cases was reported. The vast majority, 14,428 individuals, were diagnosed without warning signs. These are areas with high population density where the virus continues to find space to spread. The situation is also reflected in hospitals. Another 1,726 patients presented with warning signs, and 108 cases were classified as severe dengue. Official data indicates that the Metropolitan Region leads with 4,905 reported cases, followed by San Miguelito with 2,786, Panamá Oeste with 1,715, and Panamá Norte with 1,528.
