Health and Safety Inspections During Panama's Carnival

Panama's Ministry of Health reported over 17,000 medical services during carnival, alongside extensive food and vehicle inspections that led to fines and violations.


The Ministry of Health (Minsa) provided a total of 17,074 medical services in hospitals and in the primary care network during the carnival festivities, mainly for emergency cases. Minsa attended to 1,389 cases of trauma, 49 cases of burns, 102 cases of food poisoning, and 84 cases of traffic accidents. In turn, the Department of Environmental Sanitation and the National Directorate of Food Control and Veterinary Surveillance (DINACAVV) inspected 5,757 fixed and mobile stalls. Additionally, eight deaths were recorded.

A total of 10,469 food handlers were inspected, of which 9,520 had their permits, while 949 did not carry the corresponding permit. It was found that 5,230 stalls complied with health regulations, while 352 did not comply. During this period, the entity carried out 472 transfers for medical emergencies, 455 by land, 10 by water, and 7 by air. Likewise, 1,417 tankers were inspected, of which 1,404 complied with health regulations and 13 were rejected. Authorities carried out the destruction and seizure of 303 products, imposed 53 fines, and issued 92 citations to various establishments.
