The Public Defender's Office opened a complaint regarding the possible violation of the right to a healthy environment in the Puente del Rey area, in Panama Viejo, following an inspection by the Environmental Affairs Directorate. During the inspection, it was confirmed that the wetlands in the area were affected by the improper disposal of solid waste. According to the verification carried out by the National Human Rights Institution (INDH), in Villa del Rey, calle primera, an illegal landfill with various types of waste was detected. At the site, used tires, plastic containers, Tetrapak containers, PVC tubes, cans, plastic bags with household waste, construction material remnants known as caliche, and wooden pallets were observed. Footage taken during the inspection also revealed environmental pollution over an area of more than 800 meters. The images show that waste extends into areas near vegetation and natural spaces, while some waste is located near a body of water, which could pose a potential risk of contamination. Additionally, the site is located near residential areas, a situation that could lead to health impacts, proliferation of vectors, and deterioration of the environmental conditions of the area. The Human Rights Officer of the Environmental Affairs Directorate, Anaís Castillero, pointed out that a large amount of waste is accumulating on the lands of the former Gallinero River, currently known as Río Abajo. She indicated that after completing the inspection, it was determined that there was an improper disposal of solid waste, so it was decided to open a complaint in defense of the right to a healthy environment.
