SENNIAF Denies Scandal Over Pregnant Girls in Shelters

The General Director of the National Secretariat for Childhood, Adolescence and Family (SENNIAF), Lilibeth Cárdenas, traveled to the María Guadalupe Home to first-hand verify the care provided to pregnant adolescents and young mothers. The visit came after the circulation of reports that, according to the entity, have been misrepresented in some media outlets. According to the database of the Articulation Directorate for Child Protection (DAPI), the unit in charge of supervising these centers, there is no record in any of the 6 shelters for young mothers and pregnant adolescents of cases of girls aged 8 or 9 being pregnant, as has been recently reported. She warned that if any case is detected in which a minor has become pregnant within a protection center, immediate complaints will be filed with the relevant authorities. These spaces, according to the entity, are designed to protect, guide, and provide opportunities for adolescents in vulnerable situations, allowing them to resume their life project. The institution emphasizes that this information is incorrect. SENNIAF also informed that in the coming days, supervision campaigns in the shelters will be reactivated, with the objective of reinforcing surveillance. They insist that their main function is to accompany and ensure dignified conditions for young people. The institution regretted the dissemination of incorrect information on such a sensitive issue and assured that it will continue to act responsibly and transparently, verifying each situation to guarantee the well-being of childhood and adolescence.
