Obesity is associated with a higher risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases. In Panama, 71.7% of the population lives with overweight or obesity, and 38,392 people are treated for this condition in Minsa facilities. The Ministry of Health (Minsa), in conjunction with the Social Security Fund (CSS) and with the technical support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), presented the Evidence-Informed Clinical Practice Guide for the Management of Obesity in Adults. This is a key tool to address this major public health challenge and its effects on the population. The Minister of Health, Fernando Boyd Galindo, indicated that the guide is based on a fundamental principle: obesity must be addressed comprehensively and person-centered, through an effective treatment that combines nutritional interventions, physical exercise, mental health support, pharmacological treatment, and, in specific cases, surgery. He also highlighted that obesity is a disease associated with a higher risk of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases. In turn, the General Director of Public Health, Yelkys Gil, explained that the guide will "allow for the standardization of processes and improve the coverage and accessibility of health services." Gil emphasized that there is a focus on promoting healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and a balanced diet as key measures to reduce overweight and obesity in the adult population. In addition to being based on scientific evidence, this guide promotes empathy, respect, and understanding of the social, economic, and behavioral context, which are fundamental factors for treatment adherence and the adoption of sustainable lifestyle changes. The presentation was attended by the Minister of Health, Fernando Boyd Galindo; the PAHO/WHO Representative in Panama, Ana Riviére Cinnamond; the General Director of Public Health, Yelkys Gil; the National Deputy Director of Primary Health Care of the Social Security Fund, Hiram Martín; as well as national directors of the Ministry of Health.
