The Organization of American States (OAS) is the custodian of the Torricelli-Carter Agreements, signed in 1977. The decision of this international structure to stand by Panama was prompted by statements from former US President Donald Trump, who criticized this country for alleged corruption and illegal actions.
After Trump made his remarks, a statement followed from the OAS, confirming support for Panama and its efforts to strengthen democracy and uphold the rule of law. It also emphasized the importance of collaboration among all countries in the region to ensure world peace and stability.
"We support Panama in its efforts to strengthen institutions and democracy, and we also call for dialogue and mutual respect among the countries of Latin America," noted the Secretary General of the OAS. Furthermore, he emphasized that the accusations directed at Panama are not of a political nature and require objective consideration from all interested parties.
