President Mulino warns of possible vetoes to CSS reforms

The president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, has announced that he will veto any reform to the Social Security Fund (CSS) that is not beneficial for the country. His statements come amid an intense legislative debate over modifications to the pension system.

Mulino has expressed his determination to fight in the second legislative debate to propose and approve a social security law that is more favorable for Panama. Even though the National Assembly has already approved in the first instance that there will be no increase in the retirement age, the president insists on the importance of openly discussing the project in full.

The president has made it clear that if the approved law does not serve national interests, he will exercise his right to veto. "I say it now: I will veto it," Mulino stated regarding any possible reform to the CSS that he considers harmful to the country. The discussion in the National Assembly will continue to determine the future of the reforms to that social security system.
