Panama Will Not Offer Asylum to Migrants from the U.S.

The government of President Donald Trump deported migrants from Asian countries to Panama. This has led to a situation in which Panama has decided not to offer asylum to migrants arriving from the United States.

According to statements by Panama's Minister of Government, Janaina Tewaney Mencomo, in a press conference at the Foreign Ministry, "we are not going to allow this kind of situation to become a habit." She added that the country cannot face these challenges alone and that there is a need for regional cooperation to address the issue of migration jointly.

In this regard, the Panamanian government has also expressed its interest in seeking long-term solutions to address the structural causes of migration affecting the region. "We are looking to ensure the protection of human rights for all people who transit through our country," said Mencomo.

These statements come in a context where the United States continues to deport migrants from various countries, including those of Asian origin. Panama, like many other receiving countries for migrants, faces the challenge of managing increasingly complex and varied migration flows.
