Panama Advocates Dialogue in UN Vote

In a recent session of the UN Security Council, Panama opted for abstention on three amendments proposed by the European Union. Additionally, it abstained on a resolution put forward by Russia and voted against two other Russian amendments. Panama's Foreign Minister, Javier Martínez-Acha, explained that the country's decision was to promote dialogue and consensus between Russia and Ukraine, prioritizing peaceful and lasting solutions to the conflict in Eastern Europe.

Martínez-Acha pointed out that Panama's stance is based on the promotion of dialogue and consensus in accordance with the United Nations Charter. In this sense, the abstention vote reflects the intention to ensure peace and find solutions that facilitate a future peace process. The chancellor explained that Panama seeks to be an actor that fosters dialogue and understanding among the parties involved in international conflicts.

In the UN General Assembly, several resolutions were on the table. Panama abstained on the proposal of a resolution from Ukraine, as well as on a resolution from the European Union that included amendments promoted by the United States. Likewise, Panama voted against a resolution presented by Russia. In the Security Council, Panama supported a resolution from the United States advocating for a swift end to the conflict in Eastern Europe and promoting lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.

The resolution, which was adopted with 10 votes in favor and 5 abstentions, was supported by countries such as Algeria, Guyana, China, Russia, and the United States, among others. Panama, in line with its voting history at the UN, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting dialogue and consensus as paths to finding peaceful and lasting solutions to international conflicts.
