The Electoral Tribunal of Panama has announced the installation of the National Commission for Electoral Reforms (CNRE), which will be responsible for presenting a reform project to the National Assembly once the relevant consultations are concluded.
The CNRE, composed of representatives from various sectors of Panamanian society, will have the responsibility to analyze and propose modifications to the current electoral regulations. Among the topics expected to be addressed are possible changes to the voting system, the organization of the electoral processes, and ensuring transparency in the system.
The objective of this commission is to promote improvements in Panama's electoral system with a view to strengthening democracy and ensuring citizen participation on equal terms. It is expected that once the reform proposals are presented, the National Assembly will initiate its debate and subsequent approval, should they consider them pertinent.
One of the spokespersons for the Electoral Tribunal stated: "The installation of this commission represents a significant step in strengthening our democratic institutions. We are confident that the work of the CNRE will contribute to the construction of a more efficient and fair electoral system for the benefit of all citizens."
