The Cabinet authorized the purchase of four propeller-driven fighters and two tactical transport aircraft by the State, despite the current tightness of public finances. The acquisition of these aircraft was made public after a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, which approved the million-dollar expenditure to strengthen the military capabilities of the country.
According to the official statement, the purchase of these planes aims to strengthen national defense and respond to the security needs of the country in a context of growing regional challenges. Although some sectors have expressed their concern about the economic impact of this acquisition amidst the financial crisis, authorities defend the investment as necessary to ensure the security and sovereignty of the State.
In the words of the Minister of Defense, this purchase represents a fundamental step to modernize and strengthen the Armed Forces, enabling them to be better prepared to face current and future threats. It was also emphasized that the acquisition of these aircraft is part of a comprehensive military modernization plan that includes the renewal of equipment and training of military personnel.
On their part, opposition representatives have questioned the Government's decision to allocate such a large sum of money to the purchase of weapons, arguing that there are other priorities where investments should be made. However, authorities maintain that national security is an undisputed priority and that these acquisitions will effectively contribute to guaranteeing it.
