Hypocrisy in Panamanian Politics

Substitutes are crucial in campaigns, but once the candidate succeeds, they are forgotten. Why does this happen?

Hypocrisy in Panamanian Politics

For any candidate aspiring to a publicly elected office, having substitutes is an obligation. During the campaign, they are essential for seeking votes; however, once victory is achieved and the main position is occupied, substitutes find themselves in an uncertain situation.

In many cases, substitutes become forgotten figures, remaining in a political limbo once their primary candidates assume their duties. This situation generates controversy and highlights a sort of hypocrisy in politics.

Some substitutes express their discontent at feeling used solely as instruments to achieve electoral victory. They question the lack of recognition and the absence of real opportunities to participate in management and decision-making once their main candidates are in power.

In this sense, it is necessary to reflect on the importance of providing fairer and more equitable treatment to substitutes, who, although not in the main position, play an important role in the functioning of democracy and the political system in general.
