Rejection of Autonomy Violation by University Professors

The Panama University Professor Association opposes the violation of university autonomy by national police and calls for respect for institutional integrity in the country.

The Association of Professors of the University of Panama (APUDEP) has issued a statement rejecting the violation of university autonomy by agents of the National Police and calling on the government to respect the institutional framework of the country. This statement emphasizes the importance of university autonomy and national identity, fundamental pillars in the history of the University of Panama.

In its statement, APUDEP refers to the founding of the University of Panama in 1918, highlighting the Panamanian liberal vision of figures such as Octavio Méndez Pereira, José Dolores Moscote, Jeptha B. Duncan, and the president of the Republic at that time, Harmodio Arias Madrid. University autonomy is described as an achievement gained through the effort and sacrifice of various sectors of Panamanian society.

The significant contributions of the University of Panama throughout its history are highlighted, as well as its role in the fight against colonialism and in defense of national sovereignty. Various events and movements in which the university has played an important role are mentioned, such as the rejection of agreements and treaties considered entreguista, as well as its participation in treaties that ended the colonial enclave of the United States in Panama.

Additionally, the statement calls for the unity of diverse sectors of Panamanian society committed to a democratic, participatory, supportive, independent, and sovereign national project. APUDEP emphasizes the importance of defending democracy, national identity, and university autonomy, values they consider fundamental in the history and future of the University of Panama and the country in general.
