Corruption Allegations Against National Assembly Deputies

Ex-judge Harry Díaz claims that salary lists of National Assembly deputies show clear evidence of corruption. He calls for legal action against those involved and criticizes the government’s inaction on the issue.

Corruption Allegations Against National Assembly Deputies

Former Supreme Court Justice, Harry Díaz, has emphasized the need to take measures against the deputies of the National Assembly following the revelation of the expense reports of these legislators by the General Comptroller of the Republic. According to Díaz, these reports are clear evidence of the corruption that prevails in the entity.

In this regard, Díaz has urged both the general comptroller and the attorney general of the Nation to initiate legal actions against the responsible deputies, requesting that processes be started in the Full Supreme Court of Justice. He proposes appointing a prosecuting magistrate and one for guarantees to carry out the relevant judicial procedures.

"From there, a prosecuting magistrate and one for guarantees should be appointed to prosecute these so-called 'fathers of the homeland,' because nothing justifies the inflated expense reports," emphasized the former magistrate. In addition, he criticized the government for its lack of direct action against this type of corruption in the Assembly.

Regarding the fight against corruption, Harry Díaz reiterated the importance of a Constituent Assembly that establishes limits on the number of deputies, as well as their power and potential abuses. However, he expressed skepticism about the possibility that the current government would promote effective reform, labeling the government's efforts to foster what he described as a "constitutional literacy" as futile.

In his opinion, it is not simply a lack of general understanding of the Constitution, but a deliberate omission of its clearest provisions. Díaz's stance reflects his deep concern about corruption and his call for concrete action to combat it in the Panamanian legislative sphere.
