Panama's Government Condemns Deputies' Trips to Taiwan

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino announced his government does not support legislative trips to Taiwan, stressing the importance of relations with China. The Foreign Ministry confirmed that only the executive branch represents the country internationally.

The government of Panama has stated that it does not support or approve of possible trips by legislative officials to Taiwan. This was announced by President José Raúl Mulino through the X platform. Deputy Luis Duke from the «Vamos» coalition, in turn, stated that his boss is the people, not the executive branch, which should address the country's problems instead of focusing on Taiwan. The statement emphasizes that Panama has maintained diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China since 2017, and President Mulino has confirmed that this alliance will be maintained. After it became known that several deputies of the National Assembly had traveled to Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement clarifying that the representation of Panama's foreign policy belongs «exclusively» to the executive branch. The institution once again reaffirmed its respect for the independence of the legislative branch and its constitutional functions, however, it reminded that the executive branch is the only legitimate interlocutor for the State in its relations with other nations. Tensions between China and Taiwan date back to 1927; since then, they have promoted their «one China» policy, denying the existence of Taiwan as a «rebellious province». Mulino made it clear that these trips do not have his approval or support.
