Panama Opens Online Platform for Teacher Appointments

Panama's Ministry of Education launches a web platform for teacher selection for 2026. This measure aims to ensure transparency and fairness in the hiring process and address the staff shortage due to mass retirements.

The Ministry of Education (Meduca) confirmed that from November 24 to December 2, the web-based application for the selection and appointment of teachers for the 2026 school year will be open. Castillo stated in TVN Noticias that this measure is taken to "guarantee educational service for the student population."

"With the implementation of this platform, we are doing justice to the teaching staff that for years has been subjected to practices that should not have taken place in this institution, which compromised meritocracy and professional capacity to hold the position and subjected them to other kinds of hardships outside the law," Castillo pointed out without elaborating on what practices the teachers may have been subjected to.

He added that 40% of the country's teaching staff has retired and that Meduca's goal is not only to ensure that teachers are in their positions when the school year begins on March 2, 2026, but also that they are paid their salaries on time.

The fundamental change in this procedure is that appointments during the school year will now be made through a public contest via that platform. Castillo stated that starting this year, a radical change begins in the selection process, as Meduca is returning to the platform used in the 2009-2014 period, which, according to the official, allows teachers to apply through the website.

Castillo assured that everything will now be done online, a process he described as "dynamic" and invited teachers to get to know the platform, assuring them it is "user-friendly and explains step-by-step what they need to do to upload the documents" teachers must present: physical and mental health certificates, and personal background checks.

Therefore, Meduca expects the selection process to be carried out well in advance, either at the beginning or mid-February, depending on the massive number of applications expected. This allows for transparency but also security, he specified.
