Panama's Foreign Ministry Condemned Deputies' Trip to Taiwan

The government of Panama issued an official statement condemning a group of deputies' trip to Taiwan, calling it interference in the country's internal affairs. The authorities emphasized that such visits are not approved by them and are not funded by the state budget.

The Ministry of Foreign Relations of the Republic of Panama categorically rejects any attempt at interference in our internal affairs by diplomatic missions in the country", the statement reads.

Following the announcement by several deputies of the National Assembly that they will soon visit Taiwan to seek new commercial opportunities, the Ministry of Foreign Relations issued a new statement rejecting such plans and any diplomatic intervention in the country.

"In light of reports of possible trips by officials of the Legislative Branch to Taiwan, such trips do not have the support or approval of my government," he stated through X.

The independent caucus 'Seguimos' announced that deputies Betserai Richards and Ernesto Cedeño have accepted an "invitation to visit the Republic of Taiwan with the aim of enhancing the opportunities that exist to strengthen democratic values and the commitment to sustainable development".

They added that their stay will be financed by Taiwan and their work team will continue at the helm of their duties while they are out of the country.

Nevertheless, they reiterated their respect for all diplomatic missions accredited in the country and Panamanian institutions, ensuring that they will continue to promote sovereignty and non-interference in their relations with other countries.

The entity recalled that the country's international leadership is the responsibility of the President of the Republic; therefore, they will not accept any conditioning or pressures that seek to influence the decisions of its authorities, including the Legislative Branch.

This would be the second statement from the Chancellery on the matter; the first was made days after President José Raúl Mulino informed that the trips of the parliamentarians to the Asian country do not have his support or approval.

"The costs of the trip will not be covered with public funds of the Republic of Panama," they emphasized.

For his part, Deputy Eduardo Gaitán (Coalition Vamos) detailed that the purpose of his scheduled visit from November 21 to 30 is to exchange experiences with representatives of the maritime sector to strengthen the work of the recently created subcommittee to address the issue.

They explained that during their visit they will meet with business sectors and cooperation organizations in fundamental areas such as technology, advanced manufacturing, agribusiness, and renewable energies to attract investment to the country and encourage job generation.
