Former Pandeportes Director Charged with Embezzlement

Former Pandeportes Director Héctor Brands faces charges of embezzlement and unjust enrichment. The investigation links him to the misappropriation of funds granted to sports organizations.

The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office pointed out Brands as one of the alleged participants in several irregular banking transactions, carried out in 2019 and June 2020, whose origin and destination have not been revealed, as well as the amount of the possible injury to Pandeportes' assets, since the details of the investigation remain under reserve. In this case, in addition to Brands, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office also linked 11 other people—8 for the crime of embezzlement and 3 for money laundering—for the alleged misappropriation of funds that were granted by Pandeportes to different sports organizations, specifically the Panamanian Basketball Federation and the Panamanian Baseball Federation. Brands was a deputy for the Democratic Revolutionary Party during his party member Laurentino Cortizo's term (2019–2024), who during his mandate appointed him as director of Pandeportes. In the coming hours, the date for the hearing against Héctor Brands, former director of the Panamanian Institute of Sports (Pandeportes), will be set, for alleged crimes of embezzlement and unjust enrichment to the detriment of this entity.
