Former Commissioner Arrested for Unjustified Enrichment

The former commissioner Javier Fanuco was apprehended by the National Police and the Directorate of Judicial Investigation (DIJ) in connection with an investigation into alleged unjustified enrichment exceeding $400,000. The apprehension was carried out in the Ernesto Córdoba Campos area. The investigation revealed a growth in his assets considered incompatible with the official income he received between 2014 and 2018. Fanuco, who headed the Directorate of Traffic Operations, already had a record that kept him under institutional scrutiny. In 2017, he was removed from his post by decision of the then Police Director, Omar Pinzón. This is in addition to the sexual harassment complaint filed by former agent Joseph Montero, as well as a million-dollar lawsuit he filed against journalist María Guadalupe Castillero and NexTV, a process in which a judge later dismissed his economic claim in 2022. In the coming hours, the Prosecutor's Office will request the legalization of the apprehension and the formulation of charges before a guarantees judge. The case raises the possibility that the investigation could be expanded if new elements emerge regarding assets, financial movements, or possible links to other irregularities.
