Operation Centinela: Panama Strikes Blow to Criminal Networks on Colombian Border

The eastern border of Panama was once again the scene of a high-risk operation. During the operation, eight people with biometric alerts were captured. The operation also came by sea, where the Special Boat Battalion seized 110 drug packages, cell phones, and radios, and detained five Panamanians in La Palma and Jaqué. On the Membrillo River, an armed confrontation took place with men carrying war weapons and a bracelet from the Gaitanista of Colombia, Efraín Guardia Front, leaving three captured in pixelated uniforms and AK-47 caliber ammunition. During the operation, five landmines were located: two near the Binacional La Olla base and three in Alto Limón, made with common materials, typical of these criminal bands. With more than 300 special forces brigade personnel deployed, boats transporting 33 migrants, including two Colombian 'coyotes' and two individuals linked to the Tren de Aragua, were intercepted. The National Border Service (Senafront) managed to deactivate landmines, arrest 'coyotes,' and deliver a strong blow to the criminal networks operating in the area, including structures from the Tren de Aragua and the Gulf Clan. The director of Senafront, Larry Solís Velásquez, explained that the action was carried out under Operation Centinela, after receiving an alert from the Colombian Army. 'This type of operation reinforces public security and protects our communities from transnational crimes that threaten the country,' concluded Solís Velásquez. 'These criminal groups put the lives of migrants and our indigenous communities at risk,' he stated.
