The President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, referred to the recent extortion allegations and the proposal to create a special commission to investigate them, stating that beyond new instances, it is urgent to strengthen the Public Ministry with the necessary resources to fulfill its duties.
He indicated that there are specialized prosecutor's offices that currently lack the budget and sufficient tools, a situation that has already been addressed with the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
«Yesterday I spoke with Minister Chapman and everything will be arranged for the budget that starts on January 1», he affirmed.
The head of state warned that many public accusations respond to hidden interests and pressure practices.
He maintained that there are people who use the media, social networks, and radio spaces to intimidate and extort, with the aim of obtaining economic benefits.
«Everyone has an ulterior motive behind what they say, accuse, and do: to get money out of someone», he expressed.
In this regard, he made a direct call to those who feel they are victims of extortion to file the corresponding complaints and not give in to fear.
He pointed out that those who shout the loudest on television or radio should not intimidate the citizenry and recalled that these practices are not new in the country.
The president recalled past episodes in which, he said, these facts were not reported for fear of reprisals, and noted that for a long time there have been structures dedicated to these practices.
In his opinion, one of the most important lessons is that today these facts can and must be investigated.
Finally, the head of the Executive Branch affirmed that many of the known allegations could constitute crimes and must be investigated again, especially those that, he indicated, attempted to alter the popular will through political maneuvers and undue pressures.
«Let them be investigated, so that at least they climb a ladder, so that next time they think twice before trying to alter the results of the popular will», he concluded.
