Lawyer: Receiving Money from Odebrecht Is Not a Crime

Lawyer Basilio González defends his client who received money from Odebrecht, asserting it is not a crime since the public only learned of the illicit funding sources in 2016. The related process was annulled.

Basilio González, the lawyer for Aaron Mizrachi, explained that his client received money from the company Odebrecht, which was intended for the presidential campaign of Ricardo Martinelli and Juan Carlos Varela in 2009. The lawyer added that the public became aware of the bribes linked to Odebrecht only in 2016, when the Lava Jato case broke in Brazil. He also emphasized that this process was subsequently annulled by the country's Supreme Court. However, he maintained that this fact does not constitute a crime, but rather an administrative matter. When asked about a supposed triangulation to hide the origin of the money, González pointed out that the law states that money must come from an illicit activity to be classified as a crime.
