Panama's Prosecutor's Office Accepts Lawsuit Against Former High-Ranking Officials

A criminal complaint has been filed in Panama against the former president, attorney general, and national security council director. The lawsuit was filed by a businessman who claims that cases against him were fabricated as part of the 'Imperio' operation.


Criminal lawyer Roiz Navarro, legal representative of Chanis Aguilar, expects the admission of the complaint to legally nullify all sentences and penalty agreements signed within the investigation of Operation “Imperio”, also known as 507.The Superior Prosecutor's Office of the First Judicial Circuit admitted a criminal complaint filed against the former President of the Republic, Juan Carlos Varela; the former Attorney General of the Nation, Kenia Porcell; and the former director of the National Security Council, Rolando López, related to the “Varela Leaks”.Chanis Aguilar is currently deprived of his liberty at the La Mega Joya Penitentiary Center, Section C, pavilion 1, patio 3, cell 41, since January 14, 2018.Said legal action is related to the alleged commission of the crimes of organized crime, trafficking of influences, crimes against the internal personality of the State, against the administration of justice, apology of the crime and illicit association to commit crimes, to the detriment of businessman Germán Eliecer Chanis Aguilar.Navarro reported that he will go tomorrow Monday at 11:00 a.m. to the Public Ministry to be notified and see the documentation.The complaint also alleges damages to health and of a patrimonial nature caused to both Chanis Aguilar and his family, for the order of twenty 20 million dollars, added to the immeasurable moral damages.
