Panama: Union Leader López Changes Legal Restriction

Genaro López, the general secretary of the Unique Union of Construction and Similar Workers (Suntracs), obtained a change in his precautionary measure this Friday after appearing before the Accusatory Penal System at the Ágora Plaza. The guarantees judge replaced house arrest with a weekly report. López expressed: "We will contribute as we always have." This is the second request for a change of precautionary measure made by López's defense. He had also been banned from entering the province of Bocas del Toro. The defense requested a less restrictive condition, considering that López does not pose a risk to the process. After leaving the hearing, the leader said he can now travel around the country, with the exception of Bocas del Toro, and plans to take part in strengthening the union. López faces investigations for alleged involvement in fraud, falsification of documents, and money laundering, in an investigation dating back to 2022 and linked to a supposed transaction for the purchase and sale of an island in Bocas del Toro.
