Urgent Meeting Over Scandal at Tocumen Minors' Center

The Minister of Social Development, Beatriz Carles, called an extraordinary meeting of the Senniaf board of directors for Monday, February 9th, following the incidents reported at the comprehensive care center in Tocumen. Deputy Alexandra Brenes filed a complaint with the National Prosecutor's Office against the director of SENNIAF, Ana Fábrega. The Monday meeting aims to review what happened and make immediate decisions. Mides indicates that the protection of the best interests of childhood and adolescence is not negotiable. They warn that any sign of irregularity that puts minors under state custody at risk will be investigated, and there will be full and transparent cooperation with the competent authorities. Prior to this summons, concrete measures had already been recommended to reinforce institutional protocols, in order to guarantee effective care and real protection for children, girls, and adolescents under state responsibility. Senniaf, created under Law 14 of January 23, 2009, is a decentralized public entity with administrative, financial, and technical autonomy. Its function is to coordinate and execute the comprehensive protection policies for childhood and adolescence in the country. The board of directors is made up of the Ministers of Economy and Finance, Health, Education and Labor, the Comptroller General of the Republic, and two representatives from the National Network of Support for Childhood and Adolescence. Now, all are under pressure to give clear answers.
