Investigation into Shelter Irregularities in Tocumen

The Public Ministry has launched an investigation into complaints filed by Deputy Alexandra Brenes regarding irregularities at the Senniaf shelter in Tocumen. Deficiencies in child care and infrastructure issues were discovered.

Following the complaint filed last Friday by Deputy Alexandra Brenes regarding alleged irregularities at the Senniaf shelter in Tocumen, the Public Ministry visited the site to conduct an investigation. The meeting will address the complaints raised by the independent deputy, and it is warned that in case of any indication of irregularities that could endanger the integrity or safety of minors, cooperation will be provided to the competent authorities. Brenes entered the Tocumen Comprehensive Care Center last Thursday and pointed out deficiencies in the care of children at social risk in the center, some of them disabled, and the presence of adults in a facility meant for minors. The deputy also referred to the condition of the shelter's infrastructure and the lack of technical staff to care for the children. The complaint filed by Brenes concerns alleged sexual abuse and mistreatment of a minor, as well as the alleged failure of public officials to perform their duties. It was reported that the Public Ministry will continue its investigations until all necessary lines are exhausted to determine the existence or absence of criminal conduct. Experts and forensic personnel were at the Tocumen Comprehensive Care Center and conducted technical verifications, as well as gathered relevant information to document the various situations observed. This action adds to the call made by the Minister of Social Development (Mides), Beatriz Carles, to the board of directors of the National Secretariat for Childhood, Adolescence, and Family for this Monday, February 9th.
