US Supports Panama After Port Concession Cancellation

Panama's Supreme Court annulled the contract to operate the Balboa and Cristóbal ports. The US Ambassador expressed support for the decision, stating it is good for the country's people. The government took control of the ports, promising no layoffs for employees.

The US Ambassador to Panama, Kevin Cabrera, expressed his country's support for Panama after the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) upheld the ruling that annulled the concession to operate the Balboa and Cristóbal ports. Cabrera stated, "For our part, we think it is very good for the people of Panama." He also reiterated that for the Panamanian government, the operators were not doing a good job, and thus he reaffirmed support for Panama and its right to make its own judicial decisions. Following the publication of the ruling, the government ordered the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) to take control of the ports and all movable assets located within or outside the port facilities. Minister of Labor and Labor Development, Jacqueline Muñoz, assured that there will be no layoffs and that the employment of every Panamanian in the port will be guaranteed. Cabrera noted that this is a state of law and it is a decision by the Panamanian court. The CSJ's decision also declared the contract law that granted Panama Ports Company (PPC) the operation of the ports unconstitutional, as well as the extension and its inherent acts determined by a resolution issued by the AMP on June 23, 2021.
