The education system currently has over 52 thousand teachers, although each year contests are opened for new positions to address population growth. The Director General of Education detailed that this year, 3,000 teachers were appointed after a process that began in December. The Director General of Education added that 42,000 teachers participated in training sessions, so he believes that teachers are eager to project themselves onto students and strengthen their competencies. On March 2, 857,000 students will return to classes nationwide. Likewise, he indicated that in the second phase of training, 150 teachers from the Juan Demóstenes Normal School are being trained in the use of tools such as Canva and Microsoft. According to the official, of the 3,012 positions offered this year, 111 remained vacant, and most correspond to these subjects. Physics, biology, and chemistry continue to be the most difficult subjects to fill in the official education system, reported Edwin Gordon, Director General of Education of the Ministry of Education (Meduca). Gordon explained on TVN News that not only the University of Panama graduates in these specialties, but they are also offered by the Technological University of Panama and the Autonomous University of Chiriquí (Unachi). However, he specified that during the school year, new vacancies may arise due to death, retirement, resignation, or pregnancy of teachers, which are managed through the Online Vacancy Process (Provel) system.
