Panama to Simplify Voting for People with Disabilities

Panama's electoral commission approved a proposal to ensure voting accessibility for citizens with reduced mobility, guaranteeing their right to vote.

Panama to Simplify Voting for People with Disabilities

In a decision aimed at making Panama's electoral system more inclusive, the National Commission on Electoral Reforms (CNRE) greenlit a proposal from the Electoral Tribunal to facilitate voting for people with permanent or temporary disabilities. The initiative seeks to ensure no citizen has their right to vote limited by physical barriers or mobility difficulties. The proposal states that voters with reduced mobility should be placed, preferably, at tables set up in centers with better access conditions, such as public and private schools, public and private universities, convention centers, gyms, sports coliseums, or other suitable public spaces. The intention is simple yet significant: to bring voting closer to those who face greater obstacles to exercise it. As part of the adjustments, a reform to article 405 of the Electoral Code is proposed so that the Electoral Tribunal can specifically regulate everything related to the accessibility of voting for people with disabilities duly registered in the Electoral Register. This modification aims to ensure that the measures do not remain on paper, but have clear rules for their application in each electoral process.
