Panama Deputy Inspects Shelters for Minors

Deputy Alexandra Brenes continues to tour various shelters in the country to personally verify the living conditions of minors under state protection. During her last visit, the parliamentarian reported that the shelter being inspected currently houses 13 adolescents who, as she ascertained, are attending school and have some basic care services. "This is a shelter located in the Pedregal district and that is maintained without state subsidy," Brenes explained in detail the results of the inspection. The deputy indicated that, at least during this visit, the center is in relatively adequate conditions compared to other shelters in the country that have been the subject of complaints in recent years. "At least this one is in pretty good condition," she noted. According to Brenes, the shelter has support staff such as a social worker, a psychologist, and a nurse who visits the center once a week to follow up on the health of the girls. However, the legislator also revealed that during the tour there was no presence of representatives of the institution responsible for the child protection system, a situation she considered concerning. "It should be mentioned that on this visit we did not have the presence of the institution, so we have decided to continue making our tours," Brenes stated. Brenes announced that the inspection tour will continue with visits to five additional shelters as part of a oversight plan promoted by the legislative commission in charge of childhood issues. "Today we will be visiting five shelters and we will continue with that work that we have been doing," she affirmed. The deputy also explained that some officials had been invited to participate in the tours but chose not to attend.
