The Panamanian Ombudsman's Office issued a statement regarding the suspension of mobile tariff increases. The institution noted that it is necessary to clarify which bill consumers should pay if receipts with the increase have already been issued, to avoid confusion and potential financial impacts affecting their rights.
The Ombudsman's Office also expressed its support for the decision of the Consumer Protection and Competition Defense Authority (ACODECO) to suspend the tariff increase on mobile phone plans while its legality and reasonableness are being analyzed, considering that this measure contributes to safeguarding users' rights.
Furthermore, it urged the National Public Services Authority (ASEP) to continue the process that allows for the entry of a third service provider, as established by law, with the objective of promoting greater competition and better conditions for users.
The institution stated that if the tariff increase is ultimately not approved, the refund of any difference paid by consumers must be guaranteed.
Finally, the Ombudsman stated that currently, access to telecommunications and digital connectivity is a key condition for the exercise of various human rights, such as access to information, education, and participation.
