Investigation Launched Against Former Panamanian Vice President

The Attorney General's Office reported this Thursday, April 9, that it has initiated a criminal investigation. The investigation was launched after officials from the Comptroller General's Republic allegedly interrupted an interview with auditors in the case against former Vice President José Gabriel Carrizo. In a statement, the Attorney General emphasizes that the complaint was filed by a senior Anti-Corruption prosecutor. He reported that officials from the Comptroller General's Republic intervened in an investigative act involving auditors from that institution, thereby preventing its completion. The same statement explains that “the aforementioned auditors, when required by the competent authority, were giving statements within a case being handled by said office for the crime of unjustified enrichment, against a former Vice President of the Republic.” The level of the Comptroller's officials who allegedly burst into the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office is not specified. On January 28 of last year, a guarantees judge charged Carrizo and ordered his house arrest for the alleged crime of unjustified enrichment. As part of its investigation, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office maintains that the former vice president obtained income of $7.1 million during his tenure (2019-2024). However, upon completing his term, his declared assets exceeded $9 million, which shows an unjustified difference of $1.9 million.
