At the headquarters of the National Police in the Ancón district, the first ceremony for the destruction of firearms of the current administration took place, during which a total of 964 firearms and 18,568 ammunition were destroyed. Among the destroyed weapons were 429 pistols, 259 revolvers, 152 shotguns, 49 rifles, 1 nipple, 19 rifles, 9 submachine guns, 2 carbines, 7 air rifles, among others, which were seized in various police operations.
In addition to the weapons, during the ceremony, 649 magazines and 52 accessories were also destroyed, all following a protocol established at the Arms Destruction Center. Panama has received certification from the Organization of American States (OAS) for meeting international standards and best practices in the destruction of weapons.
At the event, the Minister of Public Security, Frank Abrego, and the Director General of the National Police, Jaime Fernández, presented a Plaque as Honorary Police to Mrs. Mayín Correa, Governor of the Republic of Panama. This distinction was awarded in recognition of her tireless work for social welfare and her promotion of projects for the destruction of weapons in the country.
