Lawyer Víctor Orobio, defender of the deputy from the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), Raúl Pineda, has gone to the Supreme Court of Justice to address two complaints involving his client in illicit activities. These actions aim to disconnect the deputy from a case in which his son is detained in La Nueva Joya prison.
According to the complaints filed by former deputy Zulay Rodríguez and the Public Ministry, the legislator from San Miguelito is being investigated along with 37 other people, including his son, Abraham Rico Pineda. Lawyer Orobio argues that both complaints should be archived because, according to the Panamanian Constitution, only the Supreme Court has the authority to investigate and prosecute sitting deputies.
Orobio has also questioned the legality of the wiretaps conducted by the Public Ministry, as this aspect could be decisive for the course of the case. After visiting the court, Pineda's defense is looking to identify the magistrate in charge of processing the complaints and is evaluating the possibility of unifying them into a single file.
Recalling a previous decision by the Supreme Court in which it was decided not to initiate an investigation against the deputy due to lack of evidence, Orobio highlights this argument as crucial to avoid a new judicial process. He insists that the complaints should be archived and reaffirms the exclusive competence of the Supreme Court to address these cases.
In an effort to protect his client's image from the implications of the scandal, the defense seeks to prevent the accusations from reaching the deputy while his son remains detained in La Nueva Joya, being pointed out as the main leader of the illegal plot.
