Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah has announced that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the current season, bringing a nine-year period to a close during which he has become one of the great icons of the English club and its third-highest goalscorer.
The player himself confirmed the decision via social media with a farewell message for the fans: "Hello everyone, unfortunately, the day has come. For you, I will never walk alone," he added in his message.
The Egyptian, who is currently injured and was not included in his country's last squad, suffered his worst goalscoring drought in the Premier League since his arrival in 2017, going ten consecutive games without finding the net until he scored against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Last season, he was the top scorer and top assist provider in the Premier League with 29 goals and 18 assists, in addition to being named the best player in the championship and finishing fourth in the Ballon d'Or. In the current campaign, however, he has only scored five goals and provided six assists, although he missed a month of competition due to the Africa Cup of Nations.
"Liverpool is not just a football club, it is a passion, a story, a spirit that I cannot explain with words." "Leaving is never easy. I will never forget your support," expressed the forward.
Salah, 33 years old and under contract until June 2027, highlighted the bond created during his time at Anfield: "I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, and its people would become part of my life. I will leave Liverpool at the end of the season."
Since his arrival from Roma in 2017, Salah has played 435 matches for Liverpool, scoring 255 goals and providing 119 assists, figures that make him the club's third-highest all-time goalscorer.
The Egyptian won two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, a UEFA Super Cup, and a FIFA Club World Cup, cementing his status as one of the club's great legends.
"We won the most important titles and fought together in the most difficult moments of my life. I want to thank everyone who has been part of this club during my time. I don't have enough words. I will always be one of you and this club will always be my home. Thank you for everything. This is the first part of my farewell."
