Panama and South Africa Meet 21 Years After Historic Match

Nearly twenty-one years later, history once again pits the Panama and South Africa national teams against each other in a clash that evokes one of the most memorable chapters in Panamanian football. The precedent goes back to July 17, 2005, when the two teams faced off in the quarter-finals of the 2005 Gold Cup at the Reliant Stadium. The scoreboard did not budge in either the 90 minutes or extra time, taking the decision to a penalty shootout. From the penalty spot, Panama showed perfect composure. Luis Tejada, Luis Ángel Rodríguez, Felipe Baloy, Alberto Blanco, and Gabriel Gómez converted their penalties, while goalkeeper Jaime Penedo became a hero by saving Ricardo Katza's shot. The 5-3 scoreline in the shootout sealed a historic qualification to the semi-finals, where Panama defeated Colombia 3-2 before falling in the tournament final. That team had advanced as second in Group A with four points, after beating Colombia (1-0), drawing with Trinidad and Tobago (2-2), and losing to Honduras (1-0). That match, filled with tension and drama, ended 1-1 in regulation time and was decided from the penalty spot. The Panamanian team, led by José Eugenio “Cheché” Hernández, struck first at the start of the second half. At 48 minutes, a collective play ended with Jorge Dely Valdés, who finished with class after a through-ball assist from Luis Tejada (Q.E.P.D.), unleashing the Canaleros' hopes. However, South Africa reacted and found the equalizer in the 68th minute, when Lungisani Ndlela took advantage of a lethal counterattack to level the score. Meanwhile, South Africa also finished second in Group C with five units, after beating Mexico (2-1), drawing against Jamaica (3-3), and Guatemala (1-1). Today, more than two decades later, the context is different, but history crosses their paths once again. The Panamanian national team, now coached by Thomas Christiansen, will face the Bafana Bafana again in a series of friendly matches on African soil ahead of the World Cup. The first match will be played on March 27 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban at 12:00 p.m. (Panama time), while the second encounter is scheduled for March 31 at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town at 12:30 p.m. (Panama time).
