Veraguas Takes 2-0 Series Lead Over Chiriquí with 7-4 Win

The Veragua team showed defensive solidity by not making errors and completing two double plays. For the Chiriquí team, Carlos Quirós was the standout, going 4-for-3 with three RBIs. Veraguas manufactured three runs to take the lead and go up 5-3. A Carlos Quirós fielder's choice, induced by Félix Camarena, allowed a run to score to make the score 3-2. The turning point came in the fourth inning. The inning included a defensive error by the Chiriquí team, a single to center field by José Mordock, and a Miguel Atencio ground ball that also drove in a run. From the mound, the relief pitching was key to maintaining the lead. Starter Jonathan Amaya pitched the first inning, in which he allowed two runs. For Chiriquí, Steven Fuentes took the loss after allowing five runs—three of them earned—in seven innings of work, in which he gave up five hits, struck out seven batters, and issued four walks. Offensively, Miguel Atencio led Veraguas with two RBIs, while José Mordock and Álvaro Guevara each contributed two hits. Jeffer Patiño also contributed by drawing three walks in a total of six plate appearances by the team. With this victory, Veraguas took a 2-0 series lead and will now return to the Omar Torrijos Stadium, where they will have the chance to secure their spot in the semifinal by playing at home this Tuesday and, if necessary, Wednesday. However, Chiriquí responded in the bottom of the same inning with a Carlos Quirós single that gave them a temporary lead of 2-1. The Veragua offense reacted quickly in the second chapter, when Álvaro Guevara hit a home run to left field to tie the game at 2-2. Chiriquí regained control in the bottom of the third inning. The Veragua ninth team once again imposed itself on Chiriquí, this time by a score of 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at the Kenny Serracín Stadium, to take a 2-0 lead in the series and place themselves one win away from securing their place in the semifinal of the 83rd Senior National Baseball Championship. The Veragua team had already struck first on Saturday night with an 8-3 victory. The Sunday game began with early movement on the scoreboard. Félix Camarena worked 5.2 innings in relief, allowing only three hits and one run, with four strikeouts and three walks. A double by Erick Mordock in the top of the first inning allowed Veraguas to take the lead. Mordock, in addition, stole two bases.
