The Chame municipality has initiated a project to transform a former landfill into a modern waste processing center. To implement this project, the municipality is seeking financial resources. The land in question covers 2 hectares plus 2,390.69 square meters and was used as an open-air dump for over 30 years in the Chame district, West Panama province. A verification process by the municipality's cadastre department confirmed that the land was never requested by the nation for purchase, assignment of use, or administration. The landfill was definitively closed on July 30, 2025, by the Chame municipality, in compliance with Resolution 406 of May 9, 2025, from the Ministry of Environment. Now, through a municipal agreement dated February 19, 2026, the city council authorized Mayor Francisco León Fupara to request the assignment of use and administration of this land plot from the National Land Titulation Authority (ANATI). The municipality's goal is to transition the former landfill area into a zone for processing, recycling, treating, transforming, and classifying solid waste. Another objective is to create job opportunities while the area becomes a comprehensive solution for the Chame municipality and neighboring districts.
