Carnaval Incident in Colón

During carnival celebrations in the city of Colón (Panama), clashes with police occurred, leading to the use of tear gas and injuries. The National Police had to carry out an evacuation.

So far, the carnival board has not issued a statement regarding the incident that occurred at these two headquarters of the dance troupes, where dozens of people had gathered. The use of tear gas, shoving, and even injured people was the result of a conflict that occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, when the National Police arrived at the dance troupe headquarters in the city of Colón and began to evict the people who had gathered to celebrate the carnival party. Hours before this incident occurred, Hermógenes Argüelles, head of the National Police in Colón, had informed the media about the security plan, in which 530 agents were deployed to secure the carnival activities, both during the day and at night. He pointed out that this is in addition to the control and verification plans throughout the province. The confrontations took place on the premises of the Bamboo Lane buildings and on 4th Street, on Justo Arosemena Avenue, which caused unrest among attendees and led to clashes with law enforcement officers who began to evacuate the area. Some injured people went to the emergency room of Dr. Manuel Amador Guerrero Hospital to receive medical attention. When asked about the schedule of the dance troupes, if they would be extended until 10:00 p.m. or if they would be given an extension, he replied that this depends on the authorization maintained with the different authorities, who are responsible for issuing this type of provision for them to be approved.
