Colón Fights Bronze Manhole Cover Theft with Recycled Plastic Covers

The municipality of Colón has adopted an alternative: manhole covers made from recycled material. With this measure, they aim to minimize the theft of bronze covers, which are sometimes removed by people who then take them to recycling companies to sell them. Many of these individuals are homeless people who remove and sell them to recycling centers, leaving a hole in the streets or sidewalks. The disappearance of manhole covers has caused pedestrians to fall into the holes, get their vehicles trapped, or, in the worst-case scenario, be involved in serious accidents. The mayor of Colón, Diógenes Galván, informed that the plastic covers being placed on the avenues and streets of the city are made from recycled plastic, in partnership with a company. The mayor indicated that it takes one day to prepare the area and place the cover, and they plan to install about 60 recycled plastic covers. He added that these covers will also be located in areas such as Buena Vista, San Judas, Cativá, Puerto Escondido, and other areas.
