Panama's Consumer Protection and Competition Defense Authority (Acodeco) conducted the first price monitoring focused on the most consumed meat products during the end-of-year season, such as ham, turkey, and other meats. The main objective of this initiative is to inform consumers so they can make purchasing decisions by comparing costs in different supermarkets.
The survey was carried out by the Department of Price Information and Verification (Diprev) on November 24th in establishments located in the districts of San Miguelito and Bella Vista.
Price Variations in Hams and Turkeys
The monitoring revealed the following price variations for hams and turkeys per kilogram:
• Smoked Ham Picnic (Kiener): Found at a minimum price of B/.9.75 and a maximum of B/.10.47. • Smoked Ham Picnic (Rimith): This product ranged between B/.9.25 and B/.9.59, depending on the store visited. • Imported Turkey (Butterball-Premium All Naturals): A kilogram of turkey can be found from B/.5.50 to B/.6.80. • Turkey (Carolina): Detected in a single supermarket at a price of B/.4.98 per kilogram.
Acodeco noted that during the survey, a low availability of turkeys was observed in the monitored supermarkets.
The price report not only includes the analysis of ham and turkey prices but is also complemented by the costs of other products such as fresh and smoked pork chop, pork leg, chicken ham, breast, Cornish hen, and national chicken.
Consumers are reminded that these prices are governed by the principle of free supply and demand. Acodeco invites citizens to consult the full report on its website, www.acodeco.gob.pa, in the Statistics and Prices section, to make an effective comparison before making their purchases.
