Panama's Ministry of Housing presented its 2026 investment plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs. The reform will regulate protected canons and optimize real estate processes, while a new housing law will come into effect.

The Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning (Miviot) announced a historic investment and new housing projects for 2026. As part of the reform, protected canons will be regularized, limiting their renewal to only once after three years. The processes for launching and evictions will also be optimized to adapt to the current dynamics of the real estate market. Minister Jaime A. Jované highlighted that the current administration's investment plan is aimed at stimulating the economy and generating jobs, supported by a state budget that allocates a record amount of over 11 billion balboas to public investment this year. In terms of housing solutions, the head of Miviot emphasized the entry into force of Law 468 of 2025 from January 1, 2026. Collaboration with the Ministry of Culture for the relocation of families in Portobelo was also highlighted, aiming to rescue and protect the monumental and historical areas of the region. Minister Jované announced that he will soon present a bill to the Cabinet of Ministers to modernize the regime for leasing real estate. This initiative seeks to update regulations that have remained unchanged for over 52 years. Currently, the institution is working with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), banks, and developers on the regulation of this new framework, focusing on the recognition of tax credits and the transition of loans approved under previous laws. Furthermore, Miviot's commitment for 2026 includes the bidding of new social interest projects in high-demand areas. Key figures such as the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Herrera; the Minister of Commerce and Industries, Eduardo Arango; and the president of Acobir, Sarita Hanono de Hamui, were present at the inauguration ceremony.
