Panama Intensifies Fight Against Christmas Waste

Panama City announces special cleanup operations to combat the doubling of waste during the holiday season. The number of teams and collection frequency will be increased.

Panama Intensifies Fight Against Christmas Waste

This effort is a collaboration with the Environmental Management Directorate of the Panama City Mayor's Office. The actions include increasing the workforce with more teams, more frequent collection, and greater coverage. According to figures from the Operations Directorate, the Cerro Patacón Sanitary Landfill is receiving between 2,600 and 2,900 tons of waste daily, which represents a greater demand for work crews. Most of the waste is residential, such as furniture, large appliances, and even construction debris. Waste production in Panama City doubles during the Christmas and New Year period, rising from an average of 1,500 to 3,000 tons per day. These can be collected by the AAUD teams during cleaning operations or requested by calling 311. The schedule for these operations will be announced through the institution's social media, with the main objective being to prevent the inadequate disposal of waste in vacant lots, riverbeds, streams, and other public spaces.
